Fire Pits in Virginia: a buyer's guide

Virginia has a long fire season. Cool fall nights in the Blue Ridge, lake evenings at Lake Anna and Smith Mountain Lake, and plenty of mild winter weekends in the Piedmont. A good fire pit gets used for most of the year here, so it's worth buying one that will hold up. Here's what we tell people who come by our Barboursville shop.

Pick the size by space and group

Smaller patios and HOA yards usually suit a 30″ or 36″ pit. Bigger yards, farms and lake lots have room for the 42″ to 60″, which fit a bigger circle of chairs. Our current sizes:

Not sure? Try the size guide. You can enter your patio size and group, and it will suggest a pit for you.

Steel thickness matters

Thin store-bought bowls often burn through or rust out in a few Virginia winters. Every pit we build is 3/16″ American carbon steel, fully welded. It weathers to a dark patina and is built to sit outside all year.

Know the burn rules

Virginia has a spring "4 PM Burning Law," which limits daytime open burning near woods and brush from February 15 through April 30. Counties and HOAs can add their own rules. Check with the Virginia Department of Forestry and your local fire department before you burn, and see our safety page.

Placement

Set the pit on level, non-flammable ground like pavers, gravel, stone or bare soil. Keep it well away from houses, decks, overhanging branches and anything that can catch fire.
