Open fire is dangerous. Read this before you light yours.
Every pit we build ships with these instructions. Read them, follow them, and share them with anyone who tends a fire at your place.
WARNING: Outdoor use only. Open fire causes serious burns, fire spread, and carbon monoxide risk. Keep 10 ft from anything combustible, never leave unattended, keep children and pets away, and follow all local burn laws.
Before every fire
- Outdoor use only. Never burn in a garage, shed, barn, tent, porch, screened room, or any enclosed or partially enclosed space — smoke and carbon monoxide can kill.
- Place the pit on level, non-combustible ground: gravel, stone, concrete, or bare dirt. Never on a wood deck, composite decking, vinyl, artificial turf, asphalt, or dry grass without a rated non-combustible heat barrier under it.
- Keep at least 10 feet of clearance from houses, garages, fences, vehicles, propane tanks, firewood piles, and anything else that can burn — and never under a deck, roof, awning, pergola, or overhanging tree limbs.
- Check wind and drought conditions. Do not burn in high wind or under a local burn ban.
- Confirm your local rules first: county and city fire ordinances, HOA covenants, and Virginia's 4 PM Burning Law (Feb 15 – Apr 30) may restrict or prohibit open burning. You are responsible for compliance.
While it is burning
- Never leave a fire unattended. A responsible adult must be present at all times.
- Keep children and pets at a safe distance and never allow them to tend the fire.
- Never use gasoline, kerosene, lighter fluid, alcohol, or any accelerant. Burn only dry, untreated firewood — no pressure-treated, painted, stained, or engineered lumber, no trash, no plastics, no aerosols, no closed containers.
- The entire pit, including the rim, legs, and handles, becomes extremely hot and stays hot long after the flames are out. Assume every surface will burn skin. Use fire-rated gloves and long tools.
- Do not sit, stand, or lean on the pit, and do not move it while it contains fire, embers, or hot ash.
- Keep a charged hose, bucket of water, sand, or an extinguisher within reach.
- No alcohol-impaired fire tending. Do not burn near anyone using medical oxygen.
- Wear non-flammable clothing and keep loose fabric, hair, and blankets away from the fire.
After the fire
- Extinguish completely: drown the fire with water, stir the ash, and drown it again. Coals can stay live for more than 24 hours.
- Dispose of ash only after it is cold, in a metal container with a lid, away from anything combustible.
- Never store the pit indoors while it is warm, and never use it as a trash burner or cooking grill unless you have added a grate rated for cooking.
Handling, weight, and materials
- These pits weigh roughly 60 to 388 lbs empty. Use enough people, proper lifting technique, straps, or equipment — a dropped pit causes crush and pinch injuries.
- Bare and raw steel develops surface rust and patina by design. That is expected weathering, not a defect. Heat, ash, and moisture will eventually consume any steel fire pit.
- Edges, welds, and legs can be sharp. Wear gloves when handling, especially on first unwrapping.
- Fire, heat, and burning wood produce smoke, soot, sparks, and carbon monoxide. Site the pit so smoke does not blow toward neighbors, windows, or air intakes.

The plain-English legal part
These terms apply to every quote, order, delivery and pickup.
Assumption of risk
Buying and using a fire pit is a voluntary activity with inherent risk of serious burns, property damage, fire spread, smoke inhalation, and death. By purchasing and using our products you accept those risks and agree to use the pit lawfully, safely, and only as described in these instructions. Products are sold for use by adults 18 or older.
Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent allowed by Virginia law, Barboursville Fire & Forge is not liable for any injury, death, property damage, fire, or consequential loss arising from use, misuse, modification, resale, or improper siting of a fire pit. Our total liability for any claim is limited to the purchase price of the product.
What we warrant
We warrant that each pit leaves our shop free of defects in welding and fabrication. Cosmetic rust, patina, discoloration, warping from extreme heat, damage from accelerants or trash burning, and any modification void that warranty. Bare steel is expected to rust.
Pricing, tax, and availability
Listed prices are for the fire pit only, in US dollars, and exclude Virginia sales tax (5.3% statewide; 6.0% in the Richmond region) and any delivery fee, which appear as separate line items. Prices, stock counts, promotions, and delivery rates can change without notice. Sizes and weights are nominal and may vary slightly on hand-built goods.
Delivery and pickup
Delivery is curbside or driveway within our published Central Virginia zones and requires safe, legal, accessible ground. We are not responsible for damage to lawns, driveways, irrigation, or hardscape caused by moving heavy equipment on your property, and we may decline placement we consider unsafe. Someone 18 or older must be present.
Returns
Unused pits may be returned within 14 days in original condition; return transport is the buyer's responsibility and a restocking fee may apply. Used, fired, or modified pits cannot be returned.
Photos, reviews, and privacy
Product photos show real pits and stock condition may vary in patina and finish. Reviews are from real local customers, some with names shortened for privacy. Information you send through our forms is used only to quote and fulfill your order, and we do not sell it.
Nothing on this site is fire-code, insurance, or legal advice. Local ordinances, HOA rules, and Virginia Department of Forestry burn restrictions control, and they change.
